Exploring the Stars, KLC Homeschool Group, March 20th, 2013

Mostly clear skies greeted 26 visitors (16 children and 10 adults) from the KLC Homeschool Group for Exploring the Stars at the Cronyn Observatory, Wednesday, March 20th, 2013, 6:30 p.m. Graduate student Allison Hill made the digital slide presentation, “Our Messy Solar System.” She followed this with the activity, “Kitchen Comet,” making a comet from dry ice and other ingredients on the floor of the lecture room.

Exploring the Stars, 93rd London Brownies, March 19th, 2013

Cloudy skies and snow flurries, later partially clearing, greeted 18 visitors (15 children and 3 adults) from the 93rd London Brownies to the Cronyn Observatory for Exploring the Stars, Tuesday, March 19th, 2013, 6:30 p.m. Graduate student Parshati Patel made the digital slide presentation, “Brownies Exploring Space,” and followed this with the activity “Crater Experiment” in which flour and cocoa was poured into an aluminum tray, set out on the floor, and objects were dropped into it to demonstrate how craters are formed.

Exploring the Stars, Space Society of London, March 14th, 201

Graduate student Tyler Desjardins began his slide presentation, “The X-Ray Universe,” before 3 members of the Space Society of London (SS0L) at the Cronyn Observatory for Exploring the Stars, Thursday, March 14th, 2013, 7:00 p.m. They were joined later in the evening by another member for a total of 4 visitors for the evening after everybody had gone upstairs into the dome.

Cronyn Observatory Open House, Saturday, March 9th, 2013

The skies were partly cloudy for the Cronyn Observatory Open House, Saturday, March 9th, 2013, 7:00 p.m. Graduate student Allison Hill made the slide presentation, “Mars,” and included a short video of the JPL Curiosity Rover landing on Mars, August 6th, 2012. She followed this with a second presentation, “Alien Life in the Universe.” There were some 59 visitors (children and adults) for Allison’s first presentation, increasing to 72 visitors by the end of the evening.

Exploring the Stars, Springfield Public School, March 7th, 2013

Cloudy skies greeted 39 visitors (25 children, including several of high school age or young adults, as well as 14 adults) from the Springfield Public School Grade 5-6 Class to the Cronyn Observatory for Exploring the Stars, Thursday, March 7th, 2013, 7:00 p.m. Graduate student Allison Hill made the slide presentation, “Mars,” and included a short video of the JPL Curiosity Rover landing on Mars, August 6th, 2012. She followed this with the “Telescope Kits” activity in which the Grade 5-6 assembled telescopes and viewed an image of the full Moon, followed by a Hubble deep-field image of galaxies.
