Exploring the Stars, 99th London Sparks, November 9th, 2015

Clear skies greeted 22 children and 15 adults (not including one toddler) for a total of 37 visitors from the 99th London Sparks for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Monday, November 9th, 2015, 6:00 p.m. Graduate student Tony Martinez presented the digital slide presentation “Constellations” and fielded questions. Tony followed this with the activity “Constellations”, distributing 23 “Star Finder” planispheres and showing everybody how to assemble and use them.

Exploring the Stars, Space Society of London, November 5th, 2015

Cloudy skies greeted 10 visitors from the Space Society of London (SSoL) for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Thursday, November 5th, 2015, 6:30 p.m. Graduate student Tony Martinez presented the digital slide presentation “Extra Solar Planets” and fielded questions. Tony followed this with the activity “Transit Demo”, using the “Transit Demo” model—a kind of extra-solar planet orrery—to show how a planetary transit in front of another star could be observed. However, the “Transit Demo” model did not work.

Exploring the Stars, 2nd Thamesford Brownies and Guides, November 4th, 2015

Mostly clear skies with a few clouds later greeted 27 visitors (18 children and 9 adults) from the 2nd Thamesford Brownies and Guides for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Wednesday, November 4th, 2015, 6:30 p.m. Graduate student Laura Lenkic presented the digital slide presentation “The Girl Guide Astronomy Badge” and fielded questions. Laura followed this with the activity “Kitchen Comet”, inviting the children and adults to the table set up at the front of the lecture room where she made a comet from dry ice and other materials.

Exploring the Stars, 67th London Sparks, November 3rd, 2015

Clear skies greeted 21 children and 15 adults (including 2 leaders) for a total of 36 visitors from the 67th London Sparks for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015, 6:30 p.m. Graduate student Kendra Kellogg was going to present the slide presentation “Constellations” but the program would not load. Since the slide presentation would not load Kendra simply did the activity with the planispheres, distributing 26 “Star Finder” planispheres.

Exploring the Stars, Twin Elm Adventurers, October 27th, 2015

Cloudy skies greeted 22 visitors from the Twin Elm Adventurers for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, 7:00 p.m. Graduate student Laura Lenkic presented the digital slide presentation “The Small Bodies in Our Solar System” and fielded questions. Laura followed this with the activity “Constellations”, distributing 22 “Star Finder” planispheres to the group and helping everybody assemble them with transparent adhesive tape. She then showed them the slide “Reading a Star Finder”, followed by 8 constellations slides, to help them learn how to use the planispheres.
