Exploring the Stars, 1st Shedden and 1st West Lorne Cub Scout Groups, November 22nd, 2016

Mostly cloudy skies greeted 27 visitors (16 children and 11 adults / leaders) from the 1st Shedden and 1st West Lorne Cub Scout Groups for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016, 6:00 p.m. Graduate student Dilini Subasinghe presented the digital slide presentation “The Cub Scout Astronomy Badge” and fielded questions. Dilini followed this with the “Constellation Activity,” distributing 23 “Star Finder” planispheres and helping the Cubs assemble them with adhesive tape. She showed the slide “Reading a Star Finder” followed by 2 slides of constellations for them to practice using the planispheres.

Exploring the Stars, 66th London Brownies, November 21st, 2016

Cloudy skies and cold weather greeted 6 visitors (4 children and 2 adults / leaders) from the 66th London Brownies for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Monday, November 21st, 2016, 6:30 p.m. Graduate student Kendra Kellogg presented the digital slide presentation “The Scout / Guide Astronomy Badge” and fielded questions. Kendra then showed the slide “How Does a Telescope Work?” before bringing them downstairs into the “Black Room” for the activity “Telescope Kits,” with the Brownies assembling small cardboard telescopes from reusable kits.

Exploring the Stars, Louise Arbour French Immersion Public School, Grade 6, November 17th, 2016

Clear skies greeted 47 visitors (including 26 children and 21 adults) from Louise Arbour French Immersion Public School, Grade 6 class, for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Thursday, November 17th, 2016, 6:00 p.m. Graduate student Robin Arnason presented the digital slide presentation “Black Holes” and fielded questions. Robin followed this with the activity “Galaxy Sorting.”

Cronyn Observatory Public Night, Monday, November 14th, 2016

Partly cloudy skies with hazy clouds greeted some 500 visitors to Western University’s Cronyn Observatory Public Night, Monday, November 14th, 2016. The Public Night was scheduled for 7:00—9:00 p.m. However, graduate student Dilini Subasinghe opened the door early, after directing the big 25.4cm refractor in the dome towards Mars at 6:30 p.m. She welcomed a line-up of visitors, there to see the unusually large full Moon—or “supermoon”—with the closest lunar perigee (356,509 km) since 1948.

Exploring the Stars, 36th London Sparks, November 10th, 2016

Clear skies greeted 36 visitors (including 19 children and 17 adults / leaders) from the 36th London Sparks, for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Thursday, November 10th, 2016, 6:30 p.m. Graduate student Shannon Hicks presented the digital slide presentation “Constellations” and distributed 20 “Star Finder” plansipheres to the 19 children and one of the adults for them to assemble and use later.
