Western Faculty of Science Discovery Week 2017, Cronyn Observatory, November 20th, 2017

A clear sky greeted some 60 visitors from the Western Faculty of Science Discovery Week 2017, for a Special Event at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Monday, November 20th, 2017, 8:15—10:15 p.m. (This was following the earlier Exploring the Stars event for the group HIGH Day North, scheduled, 6:00—8:00 p.m.) They were welcomed by graduate student Amanda DeSouza who invited them to simply circulate upstairs into the dome and downstairs into the “Black Room” and “1940s Period Room.”

Exploring the Stars, HIGH Day North, November 20th, 2017

A clear sky greeted 61 visitors (37 children and 24 adults) from the homeschool group, HIGH Day North, for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Monday, November 20th, 2017, 6:00 p.m. They were welcomed by graduate students Amanda DeSouza and Daniel Hatfield. Amanda presented the digital slide presentation “Constellations” and fielded questions. The visitors were then divided into 2 groups, with one group going upstairs for observing in the dome with RASC London Centre members Everett Clark, later joined by Bob Duff, and the other downstairs into the “Black Room” for demonstrations of the “Transit Demo” and “Spectroscopy Demo.” The 2 groups then traded places between the dome and the downstairs “Black Room.”

Exploring the Stars, Dad Club London, November 16th, 2017

Cloudy skies, with some wet snow falling, greeted 33 visitors (19 children and 14 adults) from Dad Club London, for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Thursday, November 16th, 2017, 6:30 p.m. They were welcomed by graduate students Daniel Hatfield and Viraja Khatu. Daniel presented the digital slide presentation “Our Solar System” and fielded questions. This was followed by Viraja doing the “Crater Experiment” activity, with various size balls being dropped into a pan—placed on the floor—filled with flour, mixed with some chocolate powder, to demonstrate impact cratering.

Cronyn Observatory Public Night, Monday, November 13th, 2017

Cloudy skies and damp weather greeted some 35 visitors to Western University’s Cronyn Observatory Public Night, Monday, November 13th, 2017, 7:00 p.m. Since it was a weekday public night, there was no slide presentation and visitors simply circulated into the lecture room, downstairs into the “Black Room” and “1940s Period Room,” and upstairs into the dome. They were welcomed by Professor Jan Cami, graduate students Amanda DeSouza and Richard Bloch; and RASC London Centre members Everett Clark, Peter Jedicke and Bob Duff.

Exploring the Stars, The London School, November 7th, 2017

Partly cloudy skies greeted 12 visitors (10 students and 2 teachers) from The London School, Grades 8, 9 and 11, for Exploring the Stars at Western University’s Cronyn Observatory, Tuesday, November 7th, 2017, 12:00 Noon—2:00 p.m. Graduate student Viraja Khatu presented the digital slide presentation “Black Holes” and fielded questions. Viraja followed this with the “Crater Experiment” activity, which involved dropping various size balls into a pan—placed on the floor—filled with chocolate powder to demonstrate impact cratering.
