Exploring the Stars, 77th Masonville Beavers, Wednesday, December 4th, 2013

Cloudy skies greeted 22 visitors (11 children and 11 adults) from the 77th Masonville Beavers, including Western Astronomy faculty member Dr. Pauline Barmby, to the Cronyn Observatory for Exploring the Stars, Wednesday, December 4th, 2013, 6:15 p.m. Graduate student Shannon Hicks made the digital slide presentation “Our Solar System” and followed this with the activity “Crater Experiment.”

Shannon brought everybody upstairs into the dome. Everett Clark represented the RASC London Centre. Since it was cloudy, Everett set up the London Centre’s 25.4cm Dobsonian, with 17mm Nagler eyepiece (66X), and directed it out the dome door to the roof patio and invited everybody to view the weathervane on the Engineering building. Shannon also gave a very brief overview of how telescopes worked. It was an enjoyable evening of astronomy and over by 7:15 p.m.
