Exploring the Stars, 77th Masonville Scouts, March 28th, 2012

Cloudy skies greeted 13 members (9 youth and 4 adults) of the 77th Masonville Scouts for Exploring the Stars at the Cronyn Observatory, Wednesday, March 28th, 7:00 p.m. Graduates student Tyler Desjardins made the digital slide presentation, The Scout / Guide Astronomy Badge, and this was followed with a tour of the big 25.4cm refractor in the dome. In response to a question from a young person, concerning the two big clocks on the east wall of the dome, Tyler explained the difference between Standard and Sidereal Time.

RASC London Centre member Bob Duff demonstrated the London Centre’s 25.4cm Dobsonian and showed the visitors views of the communications tower in south London, using the 17mm Nagler eyepiece (67X), and directing the Dobsonian out to door to the Observatory’s roof patio. The evening ended with the Scout Leader taking photographs of the group in front of the big refractor. Everybody left around 9:00 p.m. after an interesting evening discussing astronomy and telescopes.
