Overcast skies and rain greeted 4 visitors to the Cronyn Observatory, for Exploring the Stars, booked by a family group, Thursday, November 1st, 7:00 p.m. Graduate student Allison Hill made the digital slide presentation, “Alien Life in the Universe,” and this was followed by some discussion.
Allison then brought them upstairs for a tour of the dome, which remained closed due to rain. Allison explained the big 25.4cm refractor and RASC London Centre member Bob Duff showed them the 32mm Erfle eyepiece (137X) often used with this telescopes. Bob also explained the London Centre’s 25.4cm Dobsonian, which was set up with the 17mmNagler eyepiece (66X) in the dome. He also explained a few of the technical aspects of the 25.4cm refractor and difference between a reflector and refractor telescope. Everybody left around 8:30 p.m. and the Observatory was closed after an interesting evening of astronomy despite the rain.
