Star Party Byron Northview P.S.

Post by DaveMcCarter » September 24th, 2018, 11:27 am

Grade 6 teacher Vandana Bhalla has requested a Star Party and slide show for the Byron Northview Grade Six students. We have picked a range of dates from October 9th through 17th, to ensure a clear night.

I will be keeping a close eye on the London Clear Sky Chart and Aviation Forecasts, and will alert Mrs Bhalla, and this Forum topic when a suitable night presents itself.

I will be talking about last summer's total solar eclipse, and the eclipse coming to our doorstep in 2024, which should not last much longer than 20 minutes.

Members and their telescopes are welcome to this annual event.

I literally live a 5 minute walk from there, Dave, and will be happy to bring my scope down if the timing permits. I won't walk it down, however...

Just looked at the weather prospects for the week of Oct. 9th to 12th, and the Thursday evening may be possible, or the Friday. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are definately out, due to cloud and rain forecast.

I have discussed the weather prospects with the teacher. Their concern is the need for parent signed permission forms, and they have a several day lead time, so that is why we didn't take advantage of the great Tuesday evening.

The long range forecast is for m\next Monday to be wet and dreary, but clear on Tuesday, Oct. 16, so that is when we are planning to hold the Northview P.S. Star Party. I'll need to get the data projector for that evening for a short show on the 2017 solar eclipse.

Got it. Let's hope for a good night on Tuesday then. Skies look rather dismal in the meantime. Thanks Dave.

The current (Saturday afternoon) forecast for next Tuesday is for 40% chance of rain, and certainly cloud. Next Thursday is forecast to be clear.

We may need to use Thursday as a back up date for the Star Party. Fall is always tough!
