Solar Observing, Blessed Kateri Separate School, May 24th, 2012

Thursday morning, May 24th, Dave McCarter attended Joan Roffey’s kindergarten class at Blessed Kateri Separate School on Sunnyside Drive near Masonville in London. He set up his 80mm Stellarvue refractor with a Baader film solar filter for the children to view the Sun and sunspots. This was followed by a question and answer session indoors.

After recess Dave made his PowerPoint presentation “Asteroids!” to a grade-6 class. He showed the 26 children some meteorites, including 2 from Charlie Barbara’s collection from Buzzard Coulee. Then he set up his solar filtered telescope for the grad-6 students to view the Sun and sunspots. A total of 50 students and 6 teachers took part in the day’s events.
