January 16th, we will be having our monthly meeting at Cronyn, where we’ll be treated to a presentation on Jupiter by Adrien Hélias
Adrien is a doctoral researcher at Western in the department of Astronomy, working under the supervision of Dr. Pauline Barmby and Dr. Sarah Gallagher. He came from France after doing a Master in Astronomy & Astrophysics at the Observatoire de Paris in 2022. In addition to being an Outreach Assistant at Cronyn, Adrien also advocates with a lot of passion for the Canadian astronomy student community, as the Chair of the Graduate Student Committee of the Canadian Astronomical Society.
January brings Jupiter to the center stage in our night sky. Yesterday, January 10th, our friendly giant reached opposition https://www.astronomy.com/observing/the … y-10-2026/, appearing brighter and larger than at any other time this year. It’s a great opportunity to explore this giant planet – both through our telescopes and through its rich history of observation and discovery. Adrien will present “A Brief History of Jupiter,” tracing our understanding of this planet from ancient stargazers to modern spacecraft missions. Learn how our view of Jupiter has evolved over centuries and what recent discoveries have revealed about its swirling storms and diverse moons.
